How many yards for welting

I am having trouble getting the pinning right. Any suggestions? Yes, in my experience, oil self-levels much better than latex, especially if you use a paint additive like Penetrol. I think you may have replied to the wrong person.

Any thoughts on that? Oh my goodness. This is going to be such a timesaver. I wish I had known this on my last two slipcover adventures! I have more to come, and I will definitely give this a try…right after I buy that awesome ruler! Thank you for all the tips and projects.

Thanks so much! I tried your method and it worked like a charm. This is the first time that I have attempted making welting and your step by step instructions with pictures walked me right through it. It came out beautifully. Your directions were so straight forward and easy to follow. Now to add the cording. Thanks so much for your clear directions and photos, Kristi. I used this tutorial to make the continuous bias.

It is amazing and worked so well! Much easier than piecing it all […]. I have used this method before and it is wonderful.

Such as 4. Would it work the same?? Thank you for your help!! This is fantastic. It was an easy fix and after I lined it up correctly, it turned out beautiful.

This is great!!! Thanks a million! I made a little mistake by not looking at how the arrows pointed to the NEXT line…. I had read about this before but your pictures and explanation made it very easy to grassp. Really appreciate it! I totally just made a mile of welting! I will be using it to redo my dining chair covers. So easy. Awesome tutorial. Thank you. I need at least twice this much piping, so do you recommend using one yard at a time or still use a half yard? This is great!

Can you please verify that when you are marking your strips, you mark them on the RIGHT side of the fabric? Thank you for the quick reply! I need about twice as much piping so will try it with a yard of fabric.

I am so excited to try this! Thanks again! This is the coolest trick in the history of sewing! I made 30 yards of piping in no time at all. I so appreciate people who provide things like this on the internet. Great tip!! Thanks I recently made some strips for edging on pillows and had trouble with having a wavy or rippled bias when I sewed it closely over cording. What am I doing wrong. I pinned closely along seam line.

Bless you!!! I know it is an old post but thank you! Your technique actually looks fun. I hope that I will have them made by the end of this weekend. I noticed in the comments that you say you can use more fabric if you need more welting.

I cannot for the life of me figure out how to make this work with a longer length of fabric! Please help me! I need to get this done by tomorrow and would really rather not have to do it the old way. We just built a house with a lovely window seat.

Your method is brilliant!!! I had a little difficulty working my mind around HOW this method would really wor, but once I was able to visualize it, I was fine.

Thank you so very much! We are trying to make my sons crib bedding! The bumper we found was Now, we have the fabric but are struggling with the piping aspect! New momma is so so confused!! I just wanted to let you know that I love your tutorial. Your tutorial is the easiest with the clearest descriptions that I have found. Thanks for taking the time to make it. That pillow needs 4 cuts of ruffle. You will order 1 yard for the ruffles. If a client plans to add items in the future and wants to use the same fabric, should you order it all at the same time?

Yes, absolutely. The fabric could be discontinued, or the dye lot may vary. How do you figure yardage for anything tufted like headboards, cornice boards or ottomans? For deep, traditional button tufting you will need to pre-plan the tufting pattern on graph paper. Figure the amount needed for the width and length, plus extra to staple over edges and under.

In addition, you will need an allowance for the take up of button tufting. You need to know how many buttons based on the tufting pattern and how deep the pull. Recommended tufting project resources:. Sew What? Final thoughts….

You should not expect the designer or customer to do this for you. Another benefit of the workroom figuring the yardage is that when the fabric arrives for the job, you already know the cut lengths or have a cut plan drawn out. If someone else figures the yardage you don't know what their allowances were, or how they planned the pattern motif to be placed.

Calculating yardage is like building a foundation for the project. Customers would rather hear that they need less when the actual dimensions and quotes are delivered than more. It can be shocking, especially when the fabric is expensive. The key is not to be caught short on fabric. With a few minutes of prep work and simple calculations, you can be stitching with bias in confidence and complete your project with little fabric leftovers. Thanks so much for the cheat sheets. I think I may understand it now. However, what if I need a much smaller amount, like going around a pillow? Glad you found it helpful LuLu. You might want to take a look at the post Creating Continuous Bias. It will show you how to create any amount of bias using the least amount of fabric.

Your formula solved my dilemma!! It will be enough! Now I know what to use from now on!! Also, does fabric for piping have to be cut on the bias? Cutting along the bias makes your piping take curves easier and, in general, provides an overall cleaner look than straight cut piping.

Also, fabric cut on the bias doesn't fray. Both the cutting mat and the acrylic ruler have lines at a degree angle to help you find the bias.

The above chart walks you through a few different ways to calculate your fabric. While that may seem like a lot of fabric , this creates a strip with the fewest number of seams. How many feet is in a yard of fabric? A yard is 36 inches or 3 feet. Just multiply 4 feet times 3 feet and there you have it; 12 square feet of fabric. This works for any width of fabric.
