Which turf should i buy

This soil was identified by Rolawn as the ideal soil for turf production. It drains well, is rich in nutrients, and permits the turf to form dense root systems.

The thin layer of soil on the turf allows for the fastest rate of turf rooting after you lay it. After the soil is ploughed and cultivated, the blended seeds are sown into the ground using a multi-directional pattern to ensure that there are no weak spots in your turf. Our state of the art pneumatic seed drill, designed and built in house by our fabrication team, is believed to be the most advanced pneumatic seed drill in the UK.

After the seed is placed in the ground, a special fertiliser is spread onto the soil to give the young turf plants a boost and encourage them to grow fast and strong.

After seeding, the young turf plants emerge out of the ground in a week or so. They are fertilised and mown for up to 14 months. Some types of grasses take longer to grow together and form a turf than others. The turf is inspected and cared for on a daily basis. Weeds, insects or other pests are controlled so they do not damage the turf.

The turf is mown regularly, sometimes more than twice a week, to train it to grow upright. Bear in mind that sometimes it is not necessary or even cost effective to choose a premium brand of lawn turf — especially if cost is your overriding consideration. Budget turf is ideal for high wear lawns especially those which have lots of traffic from pets and children. In addition, large amenity areas, holiday parks and municipal sports grounds can benefit from this variety of turf.

All of these turf varieties can be purchased for delivery straight to your door, throughout the UK. The area to be turfed should always be prepared adequately to good working practices. This usually means rotovating the soil to at least mm deep and raking the soil down to create a fine, smooth, even tilth.

Do not walk on the newly laid turf! Be patient and wait for it to root in and ready for the first mow — usually a few weeks after laying. The websites of the companies we used varied in their ease of use.

Some have calculators to help you order the correct amount, while some companies require a phone call to place the order. Delivery charges vary widely and can add considerably to the cost of the turf.

The majority sell different types of turf for different uses and situations, such as shade and active families, so think about your needs before ordering. Bear in mind that you may need access for a large lorry and that pallet deliveries will usually only be moved to the kerb outside your house. Some places may be able to arrange delivery, although you may have to wait for this. All the places we checked got regular weekly or fortnightly deliveries in spring and were happy to tell us what day it was expected, with one even offering to phone us back once it had arrived.

This is ideal as you get fresh turf that has just been delivered. The turf we saw mostly looked good quality, although some was older and a bit dry. Prices and turf sizes can vary enormously, although Rolawn Medallion turf is by far the most common type sold. It should be moist but not wet. Make sure that the grass is green, that the turves are thick, even in depth, and that the edges are straight rather than ragged, as straight edges are much easier to join.

There should be no holes in the soil, no yellowing in the sward, no sign of weeds and preferably very few stones in the soil as these make turves heavy and difficult to lay.

Well, every company grows their own turf varieties, so if you are unsure about which turf to go for then speak to your chosen supplier for advice. Here at Online Turf we grow and harvest three different varieties of turf. Stadium Turf — This is our most popular turf in the range. It is perfect for a family garden with a high proportion of Rye Grasses making it hard wearing and easy to maintain.

This is the turf that many local landscapers know us for, and they are happy to use on all of their projects. If it is a nice family garden lawn that you are after — Stadium is the turf for you. Rye Gold Turf — Similar the Stadium turf, this is a more hard wearing version.
