If the opening of the vase widens, your tulips will droop with the shape of the opening. Narcissus and daffodils, for example, release a substance harmful to your tulips. Avoid mixing these into the same vase. Choose cold water Cold water will keep your flowers perky! Warm water can cause the stems to go weak. Watch the water! Be sure to replace with fresh water every few days — tulips are thirsty! Keeping the flowers out of sunlight and heat will help them stay fresh.
Keep them freshly cut An additional diagonal stem cut about 1 inch every other time you give your tulips fresh water, will lengthen their life and keep your flowers looking fabulous! Sure enough I found the answer. For all flowers with hollow stems like tulips, before you drop them into the vase you need to poke a hole on the stem just below the flower head with a needle or a safety pin or even a tooth pick.
As soon as the flowers are in the water air bubbles will rise up the stem. Once the air bubble is inside it blocks the water from reaching the flower head. The hole next to the flower head acts as exit for the air bubble, thereby keeping the hollow stem block free.
